His research focuses on Georgian history, the peoples of the North Caucasus, and geopolitics, with particular attention to Russian imperial geopolitics in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Georgian–North Caucasian relations, and political and administrative developments in Batumi, including the city’s system of self-government between 1888 and 1914. He is the author and co-author of several monographs and dozens of scholarly articles.
