Most of the studies dealing with this subject focus on the processes and events that occurred in the imperial center. In this special issue of our journal, the editors would like to respond to the challenge of discussing this process as it unfolded on the peripheries of the Russian imperial space. This special thematic issue aims at examining the local, regional and peripheral manifestations and repercussions of the social and political turmoil that engulfed the Russian Empire and its society in 1917. Moreover, our project specifically aims at taking into consideration and reassessing the experiences of those social groups and strata that were not represented or were under-researched in the framework of the dominant narratives and approaches. Various marginal(ized) or minority groups – such as, e.g., women or certain specific ethnic and social communities – that generally felt oppressed under the Ancien Regime, appropriated the revolutionary message, adjusting and adapting it to their own projects of emancipation and of reversing the traditional hierarchies. We will thus aim to recuperate the agency of these marginal actors within the larger processes of revolutionary transformation in the early 20th century, a tendency which reached its apex in 1917. At the same time, this approach does not entail any reluctance to discuss the political, geographic and cultural center of the empire. Neither does it presuppose the omission of the elites and dominant groups from this analytical framework. The ultimate aim of this thematic issue is, rather, to identify and examine, from a dynamic perspective, the multiple elements of transfer (in the fields of culture, politics, ideology etc.), entanglements and mobility apparent within these processes. Besides the description and empirical analysis of the social and political processes that developed within the context of the general crisis produced by war and revolution, we will particularly emphasize the symbolic dimension and the sphere of the social and political imaginary in the revolutionary period. Specifically, we will focus on artworks and literary productions, propaganda images and collective representations, as these were reflected and interpreted by the popular culture of that era. It is not our goal to cover thoroughly all the aspects of this vast field. Rather, the articles included in this thematic issue will discuss in detail a number of revealing cases and will focus on the “contact zones” (contested issues and spaces) between the dominant and the subaltern groups.

On the basis of the conceptual framework sketched above, we welcome contributions that will discuss and explore various aspects of the following thematic clusters:

Nationalism, regionalism and tendencies toward self-determination in the context of the Russian Revolution of 1917.

Global processes of social and geographic mobility, urbanization and proletarianization at the imperial peripheries in the revolutionary context of 1905-1917.

The impact and the shapes of the Russian Revolution in rural areas: the agrarian question, redistribution of land and landed property / estates, social restructurings and reconfigurations.

Popular interpretations of political events and transformations: a history from below

Forms of violence at the peripheries in the revolutionary context: war, rebellions, pogroms, deportations, mass killings, ethnic cleansing etc.

The symbolic character of revolutionary violence and discourses: inversions, diversions, subversions.

The involvement of individuals belonging to minority ethnic groups in various militant and ‘liberating’ political and cultural movements and the impact of these messages.

Symbolic expressions, artistic and literary productions of the Russian Revolution: representations of political power, of revolutionary leadership, and of the people / nation in popular culture, in high culture, and within avant-garde cultural circles.

Religious, millenarian and “neo-protestant” movements: forms of religious and political syncretism in the context of radical revolutionary transformations.

Survival strategies and attitudes of non-involvement: silent majorities, degrees of opportunism, political passivity, non-engagement, and national indifference.

Women and feminism(s) in the context of the Russian Revolution: gender- and class-based discourses of emancipation.

Revolutionary projections of the future: utopian, anti-utopian (dystopian) discourses, revolutionary uchronias etc.

The papers should be done according journal editing rules: https://plural.upsc.md/?page_id=104

Dead line: October 30th 2017

Please send your contribution to the following email address: pluralreview[at]gmail.com

Apel la contribuții pentru numărul tematic „Revoluția rusă din 1917 la periferii”/ „The 1917 Russian Revolution in the Borderlands”

Coordonatori: Petru Negură and Andrei Cușco

Revoluția rusă din 1917 a fost un moment de cotitură pentru întreaga Europă de Est, dar și pentru Caucaz și Asia Centrală – în cazul provinciilor Imperiului Rus și în țările din vecinătate.
